A Ming-dynasty Chinese phoenix rank badge — the embroidered insignia (known as a buzi, or mandarin square) worn by the wives of imperial officials between 1368 and 1644. Pairs of phoenixes soar among peonies, ruyi-style cloud scrolls, and stylised waves, rendered in cinnabar red, jade green, and indigo on a warm sand ground.
This pillow cover brings that ornament to a sofa or armchair — printed in Europe on a cotton-polyester blend. Pairs beautifully with chinoiserie and maximalist interiors — equally at home on a velvet chair, in a layered library, or against rattan, linen, and dark walnut.
