This dramatic celestial map captures the northern sky as it was illustrated in 1693 — a hand-engraved star chart filled with mythological figures: the Great Bear (Ursa Major) lumbering across the lower half, Perseus brandishing the head of Medusa, Cassiopeia and Cepheus enthroned, the coiled green Draco dragon, the swan Cygnus in flight, and the small Ursa Minor at the celestial pole. Originally produced in Paris during the late Baroque era, this kind of illustrated star chart was both a scientific instrument and a work of decorative art.
